Answer to: If I spoke with your past staff that you managed, how would they describe you?
So, this may be a two part answer, where you can state that some staff will comment on how you had an open door policy, and let them be proactive and take charge, but other staff may say that you were involved in their daily work to constantly check on how they were doing. Your answer during the interview should state that it will depend on which employee they speak with, due to the nature and level of maturity and dependability each staff member had.
Since this is really a management question, you have NO idea how the current staff is currently being managed. The safest route here is to state how your management style will be based on each unique strength and weakness the employee has. Your ultimate goal is for both the employee to thrive but to also assure that deadlines are met and the team is a successful unit.
