Job Interview

Answer to: Why Are You In The Job Market?

Your answer should match closely to the current job opportunity for which you are interviewing.

Let’s say you are applying for an Accountant position…your answer should be something like this:

  • I am actually very happy with my current role and firm, but in the last few months I have felt that I am capable of doing more. A friend of mine happened to forward this job opportunity to me. When I reviewed it I became very excited. I felt this was an ideal opportunity, as it embraced my background and skill set, adding tremendous value to you, while at the same time, I would feel challenged with the new responsibilities, providing me with new challenges and career satisfaction.

  • Other reasons can be relocation, career opportunity, feeling you have reached the most potential at your firm, and you are ready for the next challenge.

  • What you never want to say here is anything negative, like not liking your manager, you got in a fight with someone, they don’t know what they are doing anymore, etc. As much as you may be unhappy, this is not the time to share this – negating a firm is not ok, so avoid it at all costs. More of this is discussed in the next question.
